Plan to scuttle HMAS Canberra off Ocean Grove put on hold
By Tony Prytz, Geelong Advertiser
Saturday's planned sinking of HMAS Canberra off Ocean Grove has been postponed.
Thursday, 10 September 2009 — Tourism Victoria yesterday said predicted bad weather had forced the cancellation of the event.
"The scuttling contractors have advised that it will not be possible due to high winds and waves," the authority said in a statement.
The decommissioned navy frigate is to be sunk to make a diving reef about 3km offshore.
The cancellation has disappointed hundreds of people who were planning to watch the event.
James Bladin of Moonraker Charters at Sorrento said they looked like being fully booked for the event.
"We only started advertising it yesterday and had 15 bookings already," he said.
"I know of a person coming from Western Australia to see it.
"There was a lot of interest in it but I think most people will re-book."
Bryce Johnson of the Dive Victoria Group at Queenscliff said they had five boats fully booked with people who wanted to watch the scuttling.
The boat operators said they were waiting to hear the new date for the scuttling.
Tourism Victoria said the sinking would be rescheduled to a date "with suitable weather conditions as soon as possible".
